Proclamation
WHEREAS,
over Nine Hundred and sixty men from St. Clair County answered the
call during the War For Southern Independence and many did not
return alive; and
WHEREAS,
we the citizens of St. Clair County, Alabama recognize their service
and sacrifice for the cause of freedom, many giving of themselves
that last full measure of devotion and many returning fearfully
wounded in body and spirit; and
WHEREAS,
their collective and individual deeds of valor shall be forever
remembered and honored by their descendants living in St. Clair
County and Alabama; and
WHEREAS,
those soldiers who returned after the war suffered the indignities
of reconstruction but never lost their courage and devotion to the
cause of liberty, many gaining respectable positions in government
and as loyal citizens; and
WHEREAS,
the
St. Clair County Commission has declared that the year 2008 be
declared as the Year of Jefferson Davis, 1st president of
the Confederate States of America. While in prison at Fort Monroe
Jefferson Davis received a Crown of Thorns from Blessed Pope Pius IX
for his unjust imprisonment.
WHEREAS,
we, the citizens of St. Clair County, Alabama, wish to recognize the
Confederate soldier by proclaiming the month of April as Confederate
History and Heritage Month in honor of the Confederate soldier and
affirm to the citizens of St. Clair County that proper recognition
be made to this effect.
NOW, THEREFORE,
I, Stanley Batemon, Chairman, the St. Clair County Commission,
Alabama do hereby acknowledge and proclaim the month of April 2008,
in the Year of Davis, as Confederate history and Heritage Month and
shall cause this proclamation to be published to effect its
declaration.
