Two full scale cannons are expected to take part in this salute. April is “Confederate Heritage and History Month” by Proclamation of Georgia Governor Sonny Purdue. Confederate Memorial Day is April 26th for Georgia’s Confederate Veterans, since the last Georgia soldier entered a surrender agreement in North Carolina on April 26, 1865. Each soldier took an oath not to take up arms against the US government without the government’s permission and was released or paroled. Many Confederate soldiers were allowed to keep swords and side arms. This marked the end of the War for Southern Independence for Georgians. Confederate grave flags have been posted at Confederate Veterans Graves in Toombs, Montgomery, Wheeler, and Treutlen Counties by Gen. Robert A. Toombs Camp # 932 SCV. The Sons of Confederate Veterans is a historical service organization open to all male descendants of Confederate Veterans who are 12 years or older. The SCV researches genealogy when provided basic information, cleans up forgotten grave sites, presents historical programs, participates in parades, and provides living history demonstrations for festivals and schools, provides Memorials to individual Confederate Veterans for families and church homecomings. The monthly meeting of the Gen. Robert A. Toombs, Camp # 932 is normally held the first Tuesday of each month at the Captain’s Corner at 7:00 p.m. your humble servant |
