HENDERSONVILLE - Confederate Memorial Day will be observed at 2 p.m. Saturday on the plaza at the Historic Courthouse Square in Hendersonville.

The Walter M. Bryson-George Mills Chapter 70, Sons of Confederate Veterans will conduct the ceremony, which will include a color guard and brief speeches.

The Henderson County Heritage Museum is open from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday and is co-sponsoring the observance as part of the Civil War display in the museum.

According to research conducted for the museum exhibit, North Carolina Confederate deaths during the Civil War totaled 40,275. Of those deaths, at least 342 were from Henderson County. Approximately 1,700 men from Henderson County, about 90 percent of the male population in the county from the ages of 17 to 50, joined 16 Confederate regiments during the war.

A large map, featuring the Civil War battles in which men from Henderson County fought, is accompanied in the museum by a booklet that names the Confederate and Union soldiers from Henderson County. The booklet gives basic military service information on each soldier, listed under regiments. The booklet also gives information on Camp Douglas, a Union prison outside Chicago, where many men from the county died.

The museum’s battle map can be bought in the gift shop of the Henderson County Heritage Museum for $5. At this time, the booklet is free. Books dealing with the Civil War in Henderson County and Western North Carolina are also available for sale in the gift shop.
